Bicycle Club in Sag Harbor

Photographer unknown
c. 1900

The bicycle craze peaked in the 1890s, with (often co-ed) clubs formed to partake in group outings or to compete for distance and time records. One such club was the Long Island Century Associated, organized in August of 1891 to make a "century run" of 100 miles from Sag Harbor to Brooklyn. Other groups engaged in the liberating pastime on the East End included the Suffolk County Wheelmen organized in Sag Harbor in 1895 (which may or may not be the group pictured), the Montauk Wheelmen, and the Shelter Island Bicycle Club, and the Southampton Business Men's Bicycle Association.
