Boy on a Whale, East Hampton, undated

From the earliest days in East Hampton, a beached whale drew a curious crowd. This specimen appears to be a right whale, today, an endangered species whose numbers are believed to be in the hundreds of individuals. Until the end of the 19th century, right whales were hunted by men in small boats off Long Island's south shoreline.
